Volvo XC60 Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
A practical, no-nonsense checklist covering the things worth checking before you buy a used Volvo XC60 — print it, save it as a PDF, or take it with you on your phone.
Fault codes & warning lights
- Full OBD2 scan for stored and pending fault codes — not just what shows on the dash.
- Check for cleared codes (a scan tool can show if codes were recently cleared, which can hide an intermittent fault).
- Ask when the last service was, and whether any warning lights have come on and gone off again.
Engine & drivetrain
- Cold start — listen for any rattle in the first few seconds before the engine warms up.
- Check for oil leaks around the sump, turbo, and valve cover, especially on higher-mileage cars.
- Test drive with the AWD system under load (a tight low-speed turn on dry pavement) — listen for drivetrain "wind-up" clunks.
- Check the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly under load, with no flare or hesitation between gears.
Common XC60 wear points
- Front suspension — check for clunks over bumps (common wear points: control arm bushes and links).
- Timing components — confirm service history shows the timing belt/chain (depending on engine) was done on schedule.
- Electronics — test every window, mirror, seat memory, and infotainment function; intermittent electrical faults are common and can be costly to chase.
- Air conditioning — confirm it blows genuinely cold, not just cool.
Paperwork & history
- Full service history, ideally from a documented source, not just "regularly serviced."
- Confirm the VIN on the car matches the paperwork.
- Check for outstanding finance and whether it's a genuine private/dealer sale.
- For imports or interstate cars, confirm WA registration requirements are met.

A full OBD2 diagnostic pass and physical inspection catches things a checklist alone can't. Available as a pre-purchase inspection, anywhere in the service area.
